The energetic Andy Edwards has been talking this week with Dave McGillivray, the race director of the Boston Marathon. The world’s oldest annual marathon, first run in 1897, is usually held in April, but this year it’s scheduled for October 11 because of the global coronavirus pandemic. But that date is contingent on big road races with tens of thousands of runners being allowed as part of the reopening plan in the northeast U.S. state of Massachusetts.

On April 12, three days before the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, the BAA received a dire warning about the anticipated race day weather conditions. They were told "with real confidence" that race day would feature 38-41 degrees, heavy rain and wind out of the east from 20-30mph—conditions almost identical to 2018. The BAA sent out an email blast to participants, which produced groans around the world.

Dave McGillivray has one of the hardest jobs in the racing industry: getting over 20,000 runners safely from Hopkinton to Boston on the third Monday of every April. The 58-year-old McGillivray, who founded DMSE (Dave McGillivray Sports Enterprises) in 1981, has served as the Boston Marathon’s race director since 1988.
