FALMOUTH — The chill of winter is here, but news from the Falmouth Road Race is a sign of summer on the horizon, albeit six months away.
Jennifer Edwards, a member of the race management team since 2011 and most recently general manager, was named executive director Tuesday in an announcement by the board of directors of Falmouth Road Race, Inc.

Since he established DMSE inc. back in 1981, race director nonpareil Dave McGillivray has easily overseen 1,000 road race and charity walk events across the United States. Those races run the gamut from the Boston Marathon, to Maine’s Beach to Beacon and the ever-popular Falmouth Road Race. Like most sports events these days, most have fallen victim to either postponement or cancellation due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19.

Amid your rhythmic footfalls, Falmouth Road Race landmarks come and go. The Nobska lighthouse. The flat miles along the Vineyard Sound. The loop around the inner harbor. You check your watch at each mile marker. Right on pace. As the beachside finish nears, the crowds grow larger and louder. You sprint beneath a giant American flag, cross the line 150 yards later, and find a bank of photographers clicking away. Then, with the satisfaction of a race well run, you step off your treadmill.

FALMOUTH — Back when the Falmouth Road Race was a year-old toddler, Tommy Leonard vowed that he’d take a swan dive off the Bourne Bridge if the race didn’t attract 500 entrants. “With the way traffic is now, probably a lot of people would have liked to see me do it,” the event’s founder joked during the run-up to the 41st running of what long since has become a supersized summer fixture on the Cape.

The Boston Marathon is a great motivator. As roughly 27,000 runners cross the finish line April 16, thousands on the sidelines will be inspired.
