VIDEO: NONE OTHER THAN MICHAEL WARDIAN WINS 116-LAP FENWAY PARK MARATHON

CANADIAN RUNNING

The seemingly tireless Michael Wardian runs yet another unique event in the athletics world, this time a marathon inside a Major League Baseball stadium

Fenway Park in Boston, home of the Boston Red Sox, hosted a marathon on Friday night.

Organized by Dave McGillivray, the race director for the Boston Marathon, the Fenway Park Marathon consisted of 116 laps of the perimeter of the Major League Baseball playing field. According to Boston.com, 50 runners took the line for the marathon in a limited field as runners were required to raise US$5,000 for charity to enter.

It’s believed to be the first marathon held entirely within the confines of a MLB stadium.

Not surprisingly, regular-racer Michael Wardian, who last month completed the Leadville 100 and the Pikes Peak Marathon within hours of each other, won the marathon in 2:53:52. The 43-year-old won the Kauai Marathon in 2:45:27 on Sept. 3. Ultramarathons, trail races, indoor marathons, seven marathons on seven continents in seven days, Wardian does it all in the running world. A 116-lap marathon is not out of the ordinary for the American.

Conditions were wet on Friday in Boston meaning conditions were muddy as the circuit followed the warning track and dirt areas around the outside of the baseball diamond.
