Gillette Stadium, home of NFL American football team the New England Patriots, will stage a charity marathon later this year, it has been announced.
The event will take place on September 28, with 100 runners to complete a 26.2-mile circuit of the stadium’s turf. Participants will run more than 100 laps of the turf as part of the course.
The course has been certified by the USA Track & Field governing body, with the race to serve as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
The event will feature live performances and music, appearances from Patriots alumni and cheerleaders, and other entertainment. Spectators will also be able to watch the marathon from Gillette Stadium’s Optum Field Lounge hospitality space.
The race will help raise money for local homeless shelters. There is a minimum $5,000 fundraising commitment.
The announcement comes after Fenway Park, home of Major League Baseball team the Boston Red Sox, hosted its own marathon in September last year.
