ANDOVER'S THIELE WINS HAT TRICK AWARD AT DMSE SPORTS CLASSIC

Andover’s Austin Thiele was the Hat Trick champion at this weekend’s DMSE Sports Classic at Merrimack College, taking home the top time in the 5K, 10K and Half Marathon trifecta with a combined time of 2:24:10 between the three events.
Thiele placed second in the 10K (39:36), fourth in the half marathon (1:25:09) and sixth in the 5K (19:25) to lead the way. He was followed in the Hat Trick standings by Groton’s Nathaniel Cabot (2:29:13) and Merrimac’s John Peterson (2:33:13). Becca Pizzi of Belmont was the top female in the Hat Trick (2:51:31, 13th overall).
In the individual events, Groveland’s Garry Cuneo won the 5K with a time of 17:43, finishing ahead of North Andover’s Brett Budzinski (18:17) and Groton’s Cabot (18:38). Wilmington’s Sarah Hjelmstad (19:53) led the way among the women.
For the 10K, Topsfield’s Jason Garrity took first (36:04), followed by Thiele in second (39:36), Acton’s Sam Peretz in third (39:55) and Arlington’s Rachel Bainbridge in fourth (40:03).
The half marathon was won by Nate Martin, who came all the way from Jackson, Missouri, to win with a time of 1:17:35. John Page of Beverly took second (1:22:14), North Reading’s Patrick Brickley took third (1:23:13) and Natalie Bettez of Bolton was the top female finisher, placing 10th with a time of 1:29:48.
In addition to the Hat Trick awards, there was also a Five and Dime award given to the top combined finishers from the 5K and 10K races. The Five and Dime championship went to Pelham’s Anthony Ellis, who completed the 5K and 10K races in a combined 1:01:27. Next was Beverly’s Edz Lamy (1:03:11), followed by Kerry Phelan of Chestnut Hill (1:04:39).
