DMSE HAS ANOTHER BUSY AUGUST
DMSE Sports had another busy August managing three major running events in New England.
On Aug. 4, a hot, humid but beautiful 15th running of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K in Cape Elizabeth, Maine had more than 6,000 finishers for the first time and a deep field of highly talented world-class athletes from around the world. This large-scale event required 50 DMSE consultants in Maine – some for the full week - managing the Finish and Start Lines as well as the course, lead vehicles and registration and more.
Founded by Olympic Gold Medalist and Maine native Joan Benoit Samuelson, DMSE has been with the race from the start and brings in the best in the business to join the DMSE team, including nationally known race announcer Toni Reavis and elite athlete coordinator Larry Barthlow, while working with TD Bank as the lead sponsor. This year featured special guests and marathon legends Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers who ran alongside Joanie and Leon Gorman, former president of LL Bean.
DMSE immediately shifted gears and headed south to Cape Cod to Falmouth, Mass., for the famed Falmouth Road Race the very next week. Race day presented challenges with rainy skies at the start that cleared by the time the 10,600 runners crossed the finish line seven miles down the road. This marked the first year DMSE managed the historic race, led by Dave McGillivray with the assistance of former race director Matt Auger. DMSE fine tuned the parking program and brought in an all new look and feel to the race, streamlining signage and equipment.
“The DMSE staff did a tremendous job,” McGillivray said, “especially given it was our first time managing the race. But it was also awesome to work with so many local folks who have a serious passion for the race. “
The DMSE team did everything from stuffing goodie bags, to clearing broken glass on the course and of course managing the start, finish, post-finish and course.
One of the most beautiful road race courses in the U.S. with a Start Line at the famous Captain Kid in Wood's Hole and finishing at Falmouth Heights, the Falmouth Road Race turned 40 this year and also featured appearances by the trifecta of American distance running icons Shorter, Rodgers and Samuelson.
Then DMSE turned its sights on the Camp Harbor View Harborthon 5K on Aug. 16 with 648 finishers on a beautiful, breezy night on Long Island in Boston Harbor. Led by DMSE’s Mike Linnane, this year’s run happened three weeks after its original date due to a storm prediction. In short, a great race on an island in Boston Harbor with the Rubixkube band (http://rubixkube.com/), Sam Adams beer and a B-Good post race BBQ! Yum.
